A landmark 2015 study published in Cell followed approximately 800 adults while collecting glucose readings, meal information, physical-activity data, blood measurements, body characteristics, and gut-microbiome samples.

Researchers used this information to build a machine-learning model that predicted individual post-meal glucose responses. The results showed substantial variation: two people could eat the same meal and experience noticeably different glucose patterns.

But it did not prove that general nutrition advice is obsolete.

Are CGMs for Healthy People Actually Useful?

The original article stated that CGMs were FDA-approved only for people with diabetes. That is no longer accurate.

The FDA has cleared over-the-counter systems for people who do not use insulin. Abbott’s Lingo system, for example, is intended for adults who want to understand how food, exercise, and daily behavior affect glucose. In June 2026, the FDA also expanded Dexcom Stelo clearance to people age two and older who do not use insulin.

That does not mean every healthy person needs one.
